Kitchen Sitll Life Sketch

This sketch required me to create a still-life drawing that contains texture, value changes, and volume of each item. The goal of this sketch was to view common items in a new way, developing visual thinking skills based on texture, values, and volume. I chose to draw the most familiar kitchen items which were a coffee mug, fork, and spoon. For refreshment of the drawing, I added an eyelash curler. I was confident using graphite to add texture and volume into the drawing. As you can see the texture and volume show well in this drawing; however, the shape of fork seems odd. I need to draw more in order to see the characteristic that each objects has.

Chair Sketch

From a magazine, I found an interesting picture of a chair. The assignment was creating negative space by contrast of black and white. I drew the chair lightly on white bond paper and added a black background with black color pencil; then I darken the shadow in order to emphasis the positive space in drawing. Some parts of the positive space (background of the picture), has various intense due to the lighting in the drawing. This drawing is a good example to show the relationship between positive and negative space.

Quilt Pattern Design

This Quilt Pattern Design is created when I just started learning about Photoshop. I downloaded six different images from the internet which mostly were pictures of animal fur patterns. I zoomed the picture in Photoshop and by using variety tools such as Filter, created a new design for each image. I arranged each images in a way to create the quilt pattern that is appealing. However, this pattern design is not aesthetically pleasing. How I employed the color in design makes it pleasing or unpleasing to viewers. I would change the color of each image to make a more smooth connection when I arrange them together. For the future, it is essential to have a better understanding of the color theory.

Process Poster: A Room to Read

This project was designing a digital poster in a computer program called Adobe InDesign showing the whole concept development based on other Interior Design classes. The inspiration of the project was architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and his latest work, Guggenheim Museum. This building evokes the natural sensation of a seashell, which I started to sketch for more inspirations. For 2D and 3D concept design, I drew at least 70 sketches for the creative design. In order to come up with the final 3D concept model, I made ten study models.

For the overall layout of the poster, I intended to provide the feeling of nature. By creating a title and left-side bar background by using texture of a seashell, it brought the perception of nature into the poster. Also, the gradient green background evokes the sensation of natural light.

However, I created the wrong emphasis on the poster by adding the picture of the final concept model. The background of the picture which is red grabs your attention immediately, distracting you to focus on the overall poster. I am reconsidering to edit the background or resizing the picture. I did not understand the color is the strong element to create an emphasis to the design. I definitely need to study about color and how they interact in space.

Personal Logo Design

"The KEY for Your House", this is my personal logo. When people have an issue with making their living space more appealing, I want to be the key to solve their issues. This is the reason why the alphabet O and H in the logo create the shape of a key hole. I also added my Korean name in right side of the logo to identify myself as Korean. The color of the logo is red because the color itself directly draws your eyes to the logo.

It is a creative logo however; the square outline provides inflexible feeling to the design. I am considering to edit this outline to an oval or circular shape. Also, changing the phrase of logo ‘The KEY for Your House’ to ‘The key for your Design’.

I started to design the outline of the logo by using AutoCAD. Then, I imported it into Photoshop for color rendering. By using both computer programs for this project, I started to notice each characteristic that certain computer program had. In order to decrease the time to create the design in AutoCAD, I need to practice it constantly.
